(CNN) — New York Democrats have nominated former Rep. Tom Suozzi for the special election to succeed expelled Republican Rep. George Santos.Suozzi represented a previous version of New York 3rd Congressional District, on the north shore of Long Island, for three terms before vacating the seat to launch an ultimately unsuccessful primary challenge to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul last year.“Tom Suozzi has a proven record of fighting for his constituents, fighting to safeguard our suburban way of life here on Long Island and Queens and always advocating for sensible solutions to the real challenges affecting every day average Americans,” Jay Jacobs and Rep. The New Hampshire man accused in connection with the crash that killed a Waltham police officer and a National Grid worker on Wednesday previously faced serious charges in New Hampshire, court documents show. Peter Simon, 54, was arrested Wednesday after officials said he allegedly struck officer Paul Tracey and utility worker Roderick Jackson with his pickup truck near 4 p.m. on Totten Pond Road in Waltham. Tracey and Jackson later died. Officials said two other National Grid workers who had been working along Totten Pond Road were also injured. In addition to Tracey, Jackson and the two other National Grid workers, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Simon also crashed into multiple vehicles and stole a police cruiser at knifepoint before officers took him into custody. In the U.S., at least 230 people have been ill in 38 states and 96 have been hospitalized since mid-November, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The tainted cantaloupe was also shipped to Canada, where 129 cases have been reported, including 44 hospitalizations, health officials reported.Many of the people who fell ill reported eating pre-cut cantaloupe in clamshell packages and trays sold in stores. SAN DIEGO -- Don't get tricked into thinking you're being fined for failure to appear for jury duty San Diegans -- there's some scammers on the prowl.In a news release Thursday, the San Diego Superior Court warned the public about a wave of recent scam attempts that have been occurring locally.Court officials described the first scam with the following example:"John Doe is called, via phone, by a person identifying himself as a member of the San Diego Police Department or San Diego Sheriff’s Office. NEW YORK (AP) — Levi Strauss & Co. said Thursday that its CEO will step down in January and hand over the reins of the jeans maker to his appointed successor.Chip Bergh, 66, will cede the CEO job to Michelle Gass, 55, who left her CEO role at Kohl’s to become president of Levi’s in January of this year.Bergh, who took over at the San Francisco company in September 2011, will stay on as executive vice chair until he retires in late April, Levi Strauss said.
