Editorial: Can Harvard regain luster after Claudine Gay scandals? Harvard still doesn’t get it.Although embattled President Claudine Gay finally resigned Tuesday after antisemitism and plagiarism scandals, she will return to the embrace of the Harvard faculty.Apparently, failing to condemn calls for genocide against Jews is OK, as long as you’re not in charge. Ditto for accusations of plagiarism, which as of Tuesday are reportedly over two dozen, thanks to six fresh allegations against Gay.Through it all, the Harvard Corporation circled the wagons and insisted that Gay would stay as president. What was the final straw, we wonder? As deep-pocketed donors fled, taking their millions with them, Harvard faculty doubled down – hundreds wrote a letter in support of Gay. Early admission applications took a nosedive, but the university didn’t budge. When allegations of plagiarism surfaced, Harvard brushed them aside. Gay was allowed to “update” her work to add missing citations.“On December 9,” the Harvard Corporation said...

Ski Wednesday: Still fun to be had despite snow shortage

Ski Wednesday: Still fun to be had despite snow shortage It was Christmas week 2015 and Mother Nature had been particularly cruel. Most ski areas had scant coverage and the weather forecast didn’t fare well for snowmaking. The ski industry reacted with hope, chutzpah and humor – the now infamous “Ski the Patch” video from the folks at Mad River Glen stands as laugh-out-loud reminder of how we fought through those too-balmy days. Here we are again. After what was shaping up to be a near record-breaking early season, the rain didn’t just fall, it fire-hosed – destroying much of that lovely white snow leaving us all, well, a little concerned. But there’s good in all this – there is! And as an industry of, as one resort exec once said to me “optimists and beer enthusiasts – oft at the same time,” we’re out there looking for trails to ski, finding reasons to still get out there and of course, constantly clicking on the 14-day forecast looking for cold snaps. The first good comes from the resorts themselves. While snow and cold may be lacking, hone...

Patterson: Economic ‘soft landing’ may not save Biden

Patterson: Economic ‘soft landing’ may not save Biden Joe Biden is fond of telling Americans the “U.S. economy is strong as hell.” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s recent announcement that he expects to make three interest rate cuts in 2024 seems to support Biden’s opinion on the economy. After Powell made his rosy forecast for 2024, some reporters claimed our troubled economy would make a “soft landing” and avoid an economic recession. Corporate executives are not convinced. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase, is skeptical. In late November, Dimon said, “A lot of things out there (in the economy) are dangerous and inflationary. Be prepared.”The Labor Department’s November jobs numbers might not support Powell’s forecast. Though the report showed the economy added 199,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell to 3.7%, the report might have reflected economic relief that unions for autoworkers and actors reached agreements to return to work. Hiring in associated industries may have also influenced the November jobs report. The Decembe...
