Colorado House plans revival of Polis’s gutted zoning reform bill

A week after the Colorado Senate gutted Gov. Jared Polis’s marquee land use reform bill, House Democrats are preparing to reverse some of those changes and return key zoning provisions to a measure that’s repeatedly been altered as its passed through the Capitol.Under amendments set to be added to the bill Tuesday, SB23-213 would again allow for accessory dwelling units — like carriage houses — to be built on single-family lots, albeit only in more populous parts of the state. The amendments would also reintroduce provisions clearing the way for density and apartment buildings near transit areas in Colorado cities, along with encouraging looser parking requirements and new restrictions on what HOAs can prohibit.All of those provisions, described to the Denver Post on Monday by lawmakers involved, were in previous versions of the bill and had been stripped from it in order to ensure that it passed the Colorado Senate. Each Denver high school could decide whether to have armed police on campus, draft DPS safety plan says

Superintendent Alex Marrero is recommending that the leaders of each Denver high school and school with 6th- to 12th-graders decide whether to place armed police officers on their individual campuses, according to new a draft safety plan released Monday.Denver Public Schools’ Board of Education tasked Marrero with creating the plan after a student shot two administrators inside East High School on March 22.The district expects to release a final draft next month and Marrero cautioned plan could change, saying, in a statement, “This first version is far from a finished product.”But for now, Marrero is recommending all district-run high schools and combined middle/high schools be allowed to engage with parents and students, and then decide whether they want school resource officers — rather than create a blanket policy for Denver schools.The decision to have Denver Police Department officers on those campuses would be determined by each qualifying school and reviewed annua...

2 teens stabbed near Los Angeles High School in Mid-Wilshire

Two teenage boys were stabbed Monday near Los Angeles High School in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Calls about the incident near the intersection of Olympic and Rimpau boulevards came in at around 4:20 p.m., officials with the Los Angeles Fire Department told KTLA.  Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department said the stabbing was the "result of an on-campus dispute between students," and that both victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition. “Another senseless stabbing in our community near Los Angeles High School,” Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to the two victims and their families. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Monday marks the first day that California Highway Patrol and the California National Guard assisted the San Francisco Police Department with tackling the sale and use of illegal drugs.The California National Guard has assured the public that there would not be boots on the ground with their work. DENVER (KDVR) -- If people are hoping to access free at-home COVID-19 tests, there are just a few days left to do that.When the public health emergency ends on May 11, patients will likely have to pay for the tests.For two years, private insurance companies have been required to cover up to eight tests each month per household. Plus, the federal government set up a website so that people could order free tests to be delivered to their homes.But those benefits are set to expire."Having a few on hand is a good idea.
