UVALDE, Texas (Texas Tribune) — Once they saw a torrent of bullets tear through a classroom wall and metal door, the first police officers in the hallway of Robb Elementary School concluded they were outgunned. And that they could die.The gunman had an AR-15, a rifle design used by U.S. soldiers in every conflict since Vietnam. St. Paul Public Schools to offer $10,000 signing bonuses to some new hires

St. Paul Public Schools is offering more than $1 million in hiring bonuses in hopes of filling a range of special-education positions and other hard-to-fill jobs for the 2023-24 school year.“In this competitive job market, we need to do everything we can to attract the best candidates to our classrooms,” Patricia Pratt-Cook, executive chief of human resources, said in a news release Monday.In a report earlier this year from the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board, 84 percent of Minnesota school district leaders said they were feeling the effects of the teacher shortage. Schumer, law enforcement warn against new drug being mixed with fentanyl

(NEWS10) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and law enforcement are warning about a new drug that’s contributing to rising overdoses across New York.Xylazine, also called “Tranq,” is a sedative commonly used as a tranquilizer for large animals. The drug is resistant to naloxone and increases the risk of an overdose when combined with other drugs like fentanyl and heroin. Mountain lion attacks man soaking in hot tub, Colorado wildlife officials say

A mountain lion snuck up on a man and his wife Saturday night as they were soaking in a hot tub west of Nathrop, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said in a release.The two sat in their vacation rental’s tub around 8 p.m., when the man felt something grab his head, CPW spokesman Bill Vogrin said in a release.“He and his wife began screaming and splashing water at the animal,” Vogrin said.The woman grabbed a flashlight and shined it on the lion, which began to back up a bit, Vogrin said. As the couple continued to scream, the lion moved to the top of a nearby hill where it continued to watch the couple, who then left the tub and went back into the Chaffee County house.Inside, the couple cleaned the man’s wounds and called state wildlife officials, who arrived and began searching for the lion, Vogrin said.The man suffered four scratches to the top of his head and near his right ear, he declined any additional medical assistance, Vogrin said.
