Two hospitals — one in Joplin and another in Kansas City, Kansas — denied emergency care to a pregnant Missouri woman in violation of federal law because doctors and staff worried that doing so would violate state abortion restrictions. Those findings were included in a report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on care received by Mylissa Farmer of Joplin at Freeman Health in Joplin and University of Kansas Hospital. The report found numerous violations of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, known as EMTALA, and the hospitals must show future compliance to avoid penalties that could include loss of the ability to accept Medicare and Medicaid clients. The report on KU Hospital also found a patient died in the emergency department waiting room who complained of a dry cough after arriving. The hospital was cited for failing to properly screen the patient to determine appropriate treatment. In a letter to hospitals on Monday, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human S...Transfer lineman Jack Bailey excited to reunite with former Kent State coaches with CU Buffs

Jack Bailey was disappointed in December when he heard the news of his coaches leaving Kent State. After four seasons with the Golden Flashes, the only head coach (Sean Lewis) and offensive line coach (Bill O’Boyle) that Bailey has known were heading to Colorado.“For sure bummed,” said Bailey, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound guard. “But, I knew I had to get my degree and I had one semester left. I’m just glad it all ended up working itself out in the end.”Last month, Bailey made the decision to transfer to CU and reunite with Lewis and O’Boyle. New CU head coach Deion Sanders hired Lewis to be the Buffaloes’ offensive coordinator and O’Boyle to coach the offensive line.“Honestly that was the final deciding factor (in transferring),” said Bailey, who will graduate from Kent State this month. “I’ve never really been out west or anything so I didn’t know much about it out here but as soon as I got a call from coach OB, it was something I knew I had to do. Rodney Bingenheimer and the law: When news broke last week that Runaways songwriter Kari Krome has filed a lawsuit against both Rodney Bingenheimer and late producer Kim Fowley, public reaction was decidedly mixed. On one hand, you had the people saying, “Surely not Rodney – the man who helped raise the profile of underground rock & roll while helping break so many bands. Say it ain’t so.”On the other, there appears to be a decent chunk of people saying, “Well, duh! The rumors have been flying around for years, and Krome has been talking to anyone who would listen.”That said, the court of public opinion is notoriously unreliable. Legally, and journalistically, it’s wrong to make a judgment before the literal judge. It’s absolutely possible to subscribe to that belief and fully support women, at the same time. The lawsuit has only just been filed, the legal process is notoriously slow and so right now, in the eyes of the law, Bingenheimer is innocent until proven guilty (as is Fowl...Mother Dead, Child Hospitalized after Pedestrian Crash on Colgate Avenue [Los Angeles, CA]

By Juan A. Lozano and Paul J. Weber | Associated PressCLEVELAND, Texas — Authorities on Monday still had not captured a gunman in Texas who killed five neighbors from Honduras, and as the search dragged through a third day with false alarms and few apparent leads, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott faced backlash over drawing attention to the victims’ immigration status. An FBI agent on the scene near Houston acknowledged they have little to go on in the widening manhunt for 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza, who has been deported four times since 2009, but who neighbors say lived on their street for years prior to Friday night’s shooting in the rural town of Cleveland.Twice on Monday, a sheriff’s office in a neighboring county alerted the public about possible sightings, but neither turned up Oropeza.Abbott offered a $50,000 reward over the weekend for any tips that might lead to the gunman, and while doing so, the three-term governor described all the victims as “illeg...H-1B: Feds want criminal charges over application fraud for Silicon Valley’s favorite visa
