DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has returned to prison after weeks of undergoing medical treatment in the hospital during a hunger strike to protest his detention on charges he says are politically motivated. The announcement comes just days before Senegal’s Supreme Court is due to rule on whether Sonko can take part in the upcoming February election despite being struck from the country’s voter rolls after his conviction on charges of corrupting youth earlier this year.Prison authorities said Sonko’s transfer back to Cap Manuel prison in Dakar on Tuesday took place as “the result of a recommendation by his attending physician.”“Wherever he is detained, the result is the same: President Ousmane Sonko remains a favourite candidate in the presidential election, arbitrarily detained and deprived of his rights by his political opponents,” said El-Malick Ndiaye, the press officer for Sonko’s opposition party.Sonko finished third in ...Polish truckers are in talks with Ukrainian counterparts as they protest unregulated activity

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish road transport authorities were holding talks Wednesday with their Ukrainian counterparts over competition grievances that have led Polish truckers to block two border crossings, resulting in days of delays.Polish truckers say that unregulated activity by rapidly growing Ukrainian transport companies is ruining their business. After Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has an increased need for imports and exports.Polish truckers want official permissions to be required of Ukrainian transport firms. Poland’s Infrastructure Ministry says such regulations would come under the European Union because Poland’s border with Ukraine is an EU border.Talks were being held between transport representatives in Poland’s eastern city of Chelm.Polish truckers are limiting the passage of trucks at the crossings in Dorohusk and Hrebenne, where the wait time now lasts almost two weeks. The Associated PressOntario patient ombudsman sees 33% surge in complaints

Hospitals, including the four main pediatric hospitals, became overrun last fall and winter with influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, patients. The ombudsman’s data provides “insight as to what is working and, more importantly, what is not,” Thompson noted.“What is notable, and troubling, is the significant growth in non-jurisdictional complaints that are mostly related to primary care and echo some all-too-familiar themes: people are having trouble accessing primary care, have limited options for...German publisher to stop selling Putin books by reporter who allegedly accepted money from Russians

She and four other Fossil Free London protesters pleaded not guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Thunberg confirmed her details in court, but her address in Stockholm was not read out due to concerns over alleged threats she has received. The protesters were granted unconditional bail ahead of a trial in London scheduled for February 2024.
