Fifth day of deliberations in APD officer's murder trial, jurors at odds

Fifth day of deliberations in APD officer's murder trial, jurors at odds AUSTIN (KXAN) -- For the fifth day Wednesday, a Travis County jury continued to deliberate in the trial of Austin Police Officer Christopher Taylor. He is being tried for murder in the 2020 shooting death of Michael Ramos. Tuesday afternoon, Judge Dayna Blazey said the jury was confused about whether they had to be unanimous about specific elements of the charge Taylor is facing to move forward to the next. While the jury has to come to an ultimate decision unanimously, they do not need to agree on every element of the charge before discussing others. The jurors also asked the court to refresh their memories on some testimony presented in the trial, but Blazey didn't indicate which testimony the jury had asked for. That testimony was not provided to the jurors until late in the work day Tuesday. Monday, Blazey issued what is referred to as an "Allen charge," asking the jurors who were holding out to consider the majority's side. Blazey said jurors announced earlier in the day t...

Gophers football can still finish 5-7 and go to bowl game this season

Published Sun, 10 Nov 2024 22:57:49 GMT

Gophers football can still finish 5-7 and go to bowl game this season Odd history might repeat itself for the Gophers football team this fall. For the second time in nine seasons, Minnesota might go to a bowl game without reaching the standard six wins. The Gophers (5-5 overall) need one more win to reach bowl eligibility but are four-touchdown underdogs for Saturday’s Big Ten game at No. 2 Ohio State. The U will then host Wisconsin (5-5) in a projected toss-up game for Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe at Huntington Bank Stadium on Nov. 25.Even if Minnesota loses both games, there might not be enough eligible teams to fill the 82 bowl spots this postseason, meaning the U might still get in at 5-7. That’s the fallout of 62 percent of the Division I programs making bowl games. In 2015, Minnesota finished 5-7 and appeared in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit because there was a dearth of 6-win teams that season. The U got in that year based on its high Academic Progress Rate (APR).The U’s current APR is tied for eighth in the nation among FBS programs,...

Wild, including Kirill Kaprizov, return to the ice in Sweden STOCKHOLM — The Wild returned to the ice on Wednesday morning in Stockholm, looking to shake off some jet lag and focus on their penalty kill in the wake of their last game Sunday back in Minnesota during which they gave up five power-play goals to the Dallas Stars. While a trip across the Atlantic Ocean to participate in the NHL’s Global Series promises to be a time of cultural learning and team bonding, there are four important points at stake.“Who said that we’re here to have fun?” forward Kirill Kaprizov asked. The 26-year-old returned to the ice with his teammates after missing practice on Monday for what coach Dean Evason called a “maintenance day.” The coach said Kaprizov had been “a little banged up.”But on Wednesday, the forward said he felt good, proclaiming himself ready to go ahead of two weekend games in Sweden.Though Kaprizov is currently second on the team with 15 points through the team’s first 15 games, his plus-minus of minus-11 is the worst on the team, and he knows...

It will also redesign the plaza outside the entrance, museum officials said, opening it up to both the public and museum-goers eating at the cafe and restaurant just inside the doors.Perhaps most visibly, a historic staircase will also be reintroduced with the removal of an existing canopy, officials said.“People use it now, it’s just under the canopy and covered in carpet,” said Ed Scholz, executive vice president of operations and finance at DMNS. “It’s still going to be the entrance to the (Infinity) theater, but it can also be used by people for just sitting and hanging out — ...
