SAN JOSE — San Jose police say they’ve arrested a 30-year-old man in connection to a fraud scheme that caused victims to lose more than $1 million combined.Investigations into a series of check fraud and identity theft cases began in May 2022, authorities said in a news release Monday. Those cases, which added up to losses in the seven-figure range, were connected to a crime ring that police say printed fraudulent checks, stole legitimate personal checks and altered money orders in order to fund the purchases of guns, drugs and jewelry. The investigation resulted in the identification of a 30-year-old Sunnyvale man, who was arrested Thursday after a $1 million warrant was issued. Police said he was in possession of a privately made “ghost” gun — carrying no serial number — with an extended magazine at the time of his arrest. When a search warrant was executed at his home, investigators located a short barreled assault rifle, another ghost gun with extended magazines,...Late Supreme Court Justice O’Connor honored as a trailblazer

By Gabe Stern | Associated Press/Report for AmericaVIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — Nearly two years after he signed documents attempting to overturn Donald Trump’s 2020 loss in Nevada, Jim Hindle thanked everyone gathered in a historic Nevada boomtown’s commission chambers and asked them to bear with him while he learned how to oversee elections in rural Storey County.Hindle was another replacement in what was a revolving door of county election officials across Nevada as the 2022 midterms approached. He had just unseated the interim clerk, who had stepped in after the prior clerk resigned. But Hindle’s tenure in the heavily Republican county is part of a trend across battleground states where fake electors have retained influence over elections heading into 2024.He is among six Republicans who were indicted this month by Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford for their alleged roles in attempting to overturn the election outcome in the swing state, which Democrat Joe Biden c...Storms wallop the Northeast, ground flights, flood roads

Leslie Kaufman | Bloomberg News (TNS)Over the last two decades, as San Antonio and surrounding Bexar County, Texas, grew by more than 600,000 people, some 17% of the city’s blocks experienced a decrease in population. That delta is largely due to flood risk that climate change exacerbates, according to a new report by the First Street Foundation, a data nonprofit with the mission of communicating climate hazards.Bexar — sitting in a swath of Texas known as Flash Flood Alley — is part of a national trend of hyper-local migration to avoid flooding, which is hollowing out blocks within cities, the report finds. The research is based on a model, published Monday in the journal Nature Communications, that looks at population changes using granular U.S. Census Bureau data and controls for factors besides flooding, such as nearby job opportunities and school quality. In all, First Street finds, 3.2 million Americans moved away from high-flood-risk areas between 2000 and 2020.
