Ugandan border town buries victims of rebel massacre that left 42 dead, mostly students

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A bereaved Ugandan border town on Sunday began burying the victims of a brutal attack on a school by suspected extremist rebels that left 42 people dead, most of them students, as security forces stepped up patrols along the frontier with volatile eastern Congo.One of eight people wounded in Friday night’s attack, in which 38 students were killed, died overnight, said Selevest Mapoze, mayor of the town of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha.“Most of the relatives have come to take their bodies” from the morgue, he said. In addition to the 38 students, the victims include a school guard and three civilians. At least two of them, members of the same family, were buried Sunday. Man critically injured in Scarborough fire

One person has suffered critical injuries in a two-alarm townhouse fire in the West Hill neighbourhood of Scarborough.Fire crews were called to the complex on Ling Road in the area of Lawrence Avenue East and Morningside Avenue just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived they were met with smoke coming out of the entrance to the building. Firefighters rescued one man from the building who was absent vital signs at the time. Paramedics tell CityNews the man was transported to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition. Police later upgraded the man’s condition to serious and non-life threatening. Fire officials say no other injuries have been reported.

1 trooper killed, 1 critically wounded in central Pennsylvania

MIFFLINTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Officials are expressing shock and sadness at the death of one state trooper and the critical wounding of another hours apart in central Pennsylvania over the weekend.Police in Juniata County said a man engaged troopers at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday near the Lewistown barracks and shot one trooper, who was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities found the man shortly before 3 p.m. several miles away in Walker Township, and a gun battle ensued that killed the shooter and a trooper, police said.The name of the trooper and suspect killed as well as the name of the wounded trooper weren’t immediately released.Gov. DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. -- At least 20 people were shot, one fatally, early Sunday morning during a celebration for Juneteenth in unincorporated Willowbrook Township, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.A group of people were peacefully gathering around 12:30 a.m. near Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane when shots were fired. WILLOWBROOK, Ill. (WGN) - One person is dead and more than 20 others were injured in a shooting at a Juneteenth celebration early Sunday morning in Willowbrook, Illinois, police have confirmed. Authorities were near the celebration, which began around 6 p.m. Saturday, "monitoring the scene, the DuPage County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. Shortly before 12:30 a.m., authorities were called away from the Juneteenth celebration for a fight, but, as deputies were responding, they heard gunshots and returned to the scene.
